Are you thinking of investing in 'green' real estate or thinking of 'greening' your current home? What does 'going green' mean? There has been much talk lately of green trends in home design, marketing, and remodelling. From energy efficiency testing, to Energy Star appliances, to new advances in energy-saving technology, 'going green' can mean many different things to many different people. What does it mean to you?

The most important thing in learning how you wish to 'go green' is learning the vocabulary of the green real estate market. Don't be fooled by 'passive solar energy' marketing, or 'eco-lofts' that aren't truly energy efficient. Once you know the lingo, you can learn and adapt your tastes and budget to your current and future home purchases. See the Information Sheets for more detail on green concepts and terminology.

TIPS FOR CONSERVING ENERGY
1. Unplug unused or seldom-used appliances.
2. Make your computer sleep or hibernate while you are away.
3. Use temperature to your advantage! E.g., in the winter, turn your thermostat to 68 during the day, and even lower when you are sleeping or away (55F!). In the summertime, close shades and blinds during the day or when you are away to keep the warm sun from warming up your room!
4. Appliance use--be smart! Set your refrigerator to between 38-42F, and your freezer to 0-5F. Clean the dusty refrigerator and freezer coils in the back of the machine! Wash full loads of dishes in dishwasher. Wash your clothes, as much as sensible, in cold water, and adjust water level to load size.
5. Turn off the lights when you leave! (At home and at the office!)
6. Replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs!
7. Insulate your water heater, and improve the insulation in your home.
8. Get your ducts cleaned
9. Move furniture away from vents!
10. Finally, consider where you place your lamps. If you place lamps in corners, the light will reflect off of 2 walls at once!
